Adula - A hotel in the middle of natural wonders

Flims and its surroundings are a must for nature lovers and amateur geologists. Where else can you find sensational geology sites, such as the imposing Rhine Gorge, the semi-annual Martinsloch phenomenon, or the amazing Glarner geotectonic plate shift - a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate – all within a short distance of each other?

Rhine Gorge

What began as the Flims mountain slide has evolved into a unique natural setting today. The Rhine has carved a path through the stony detritus from the slide between Ilanz and Reichenau over the last ten thousand years. The result is a gorge that proudly and rightfully has been nicknamed the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. The rocky formations surrounded by fir trees fascinate train passengers, hikers and river rafters from around the world with their bizarre shapes.

Felsbach Gorge

The Felsbach Gorge with its playful waters and romantic washes is located between Trin and Flims. A hike to Lake Cresta is easily combined with a side trip to the Felsbach Gorge.

Segnesboden

No two visits to the upper or lower Segnesboden offer the same view. The ever-changing waters streaming through both high plateaus are of national importance. New formations and lakes are constantly taking shape on these high moors.

Vorab Glacier

The coming of summer brings peace and quiet to the Vorab Glacier after the winter hectic from the skiers and snowboarders. It is easy to fall for the attraction of the glacier’s tip. But a walk here means good equipment: rope and pick. And you should only undertake this in the company of a mountain guide.

The Tschingelhörner and Martinsloch

The jagged peaks of the Tschingelhörner can hardly be overlooked. However, twice a year a spectacular show takes place through the Martinsloch below the ridge. In March and October, the sun shines through the 19-meter hole and illuminates the church tower of Elm for a brief moment. A unique experience!

Flims Forest

The forests around Flims are among the largest coherent forested areas in the canton of Graubünden. The spirit of discovery in young and old awakens and inspires you to linger once among these wonderful trees. This mixed-growth forest is not only an attraction for hikers and walkers; it also makes an important contribution to the fresh Flims mountain air.

Glacier Millwork

The combined creative efforts of water, rock and time are visible for all to see on Alp Mora. The Maliensbach has milled out beautifully shaped pools in the cliff face over thousands of years.

Glarner Tectonic Plates

The geologic fact that older rock lies on top of younger rock barely explains the magic of what the Glarner tectonic plate meeting point has accomplished. The embossed gracefulness before the observer is just one reason why this site is a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate.

Hochtal Bargis

Everyone can easily get to the high valley at Bargis either along the chalk walls of the Flimserstein, via the more demanding descent from the Cassonsgrat or in the comfort of the Arena Shuttle from Flims. The comforts of a guest house await everyone at journey’s end.

Flims Mountain Slide

The special lay of the land at Flims is to a large extent the result of a gigantic natural catastrophe. Fifteen billion cubic meters of chalk cliffs provided the basis for the Rhine Gorge along with the wonderful mountain lakes. The unique terraced setting at Flims still bears witness to this massive mountain slide today.

Mountain Lakes

One of the trademarks of Flims is this wonderful combination of turquoise waters and dark-green forests. Lakes Cauma, Cresta, and Laax welcome bathers. And Lag Prau Tuleritg and Lag Prau Pulté are certainly worth a visit as well.

Flimserstein and Cassonsgrat

Bald chalk faces and the sheered surfaces of the Flims mountain slide remind us of this gigantic natural catastrophe today. It is also the theme of a nature learning trail along the Cassonsgrat with information about geology along with the flora and fauna of the region.
